My Story

A TIME TO REFLECT

About Me

Most of you have come to know me as the guy who’s always smiling. I’m interested in what you have to say and how you’re doing. I enjoy making conversation with new and old friends. When my girls were much younger they would often tease me that I “talk too much”, especially if they were ready to move on. But I wasn’t always like this. Since my wife and I came to the Lord, my life has been transformed into what could never have been without meeting and accepting Jesus Christ. I have enjoyed my life, my family, and now my little grandchildren…six to be exact. What a gift to have these little ones watching our every move – learning and growing right before our very eyes. For this, I am forever grateful to Him.

Since our marriage in 1973, my wife has been keeping me in line – what a never ending task she has taken on! We have explored life and gone through some deep valleys that we thought would take us out. But God always proves to be the light at the end of the tunnel. Our marriage is a storybook tale about true love and a relationship that has lasted decades…never growing  old, not even for a moment. There are those great mentors along the way who provided us with sound biblical principles to live by that have kept us strong in our faith and enthusiastic as we do  life together.

We have two amazing daughters who have their own astounding families. They are the pride and joy of our lives. Our family is so close and it is my daughters who encouraged me to start this blog.

Looking back over my youth and early years of public school education I was a poor learner and unmotivated to succeed. My grades and behavior demonstrated this emphatically. It was during my senior year in high school that I was kicked out due to my unwillingness to follow school rules. I immediately left my home and took out on the road for the next three years traveling and living in a 1950s Chevy Panel Van. What a life! I grew my hair long for seven years. I had no phone number, no address, and never a destination. I’d stop and work here and there to keep me going to the next town on the “map.” It was just me and the open road. I’d often pick up fellow hippies along the way. Back then, in the late 60s, the movement was about brotherhood and peace.

Then, the girl of my dreams who stood by me during those wild years became the one I wanted to commit my life to. We got married and settled into a simple lifestyle. Within six months after our wedding, the pastor who married us came back to share the gospel with us. Literally, by faith, we accepted the message of truth that put us both on a new path, leading us to Tennessee to attend a four-year Bible college.

It’s near unthinkable that the kid who hated school would go on to earn two bachelors, a masters, and a doctorate degree! Along with being an ordained pastor, I am constantly learning and growing in his grace and knowledge.

After my first two undergraduate degrees, I committed myself to becoming an educator. I enjoyed 40 years in Christian Education as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. I have asked the Lord to never let me forget the depths from where he has brought me. I want to always walk with a grateful attitude as I serve those who are lost in darkness as I once was or who are needing encouragement in order to stay grounded in their faith! This blog serves to add to this God-given goal of ministry that is before me now.

From 2017, to January 2020, I enjoyed being in semi-retirement working two days a week and loving our decision to be with family, our grandchildren, and doing lots of traveling to new destinations. During this time I served as the Spiritual Life Counselor for students and families at Heritage Christian School. I loved this position most of all because this is where life was the most difficult for me during my youth (middle school/high school). Now, as we close 2021, my wife and I are enjoying full retirement and yet I am assured there is so much more waiting for me and my family on the horizon.

Being on the go has its challenges when it comes to feeling settled and doing my writing, but I’ll soon resume with freshness. We have purchased a home in California and one in Florida just a stone throw from each of our daughter’s homes, respectively. With our traveling between coast to coast to see our daughters and their families, they have dubbed us as west coast/east coast beach birds.

Whether it’s in Southern California or West Palm Beach, Florida, there is always a plethora of opportunities to be outside and enjoy nature at its best. Walking down the shoreline of our incredible California beaches is my most favorite pastime. In Florida, it’s taking a slow boat ride along the warm waters off the coastline and doing some fishing along the way. There’s such beauty and serenity in hearing the endless sound of the surf reminding me of God’s forgiveness and His unending love. Regardless of the coast we’re on you’ll always find us with family and friends.

My joy to write and journal is what started me on this endeavor of blogging and it’s what keeps me wanting to continue. There will always be a new stretch of road to travel. And yes, I still have that compelling desire to get out and take some long distant trip to explore new habitats we’ve not been to before. So come with me as we do life together…and as I always say, I’ll catch you on the rebound!

"But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests,[a] a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light."
